ROCKFORD, Wash. (AP) — “A shooter opened fire at a high school in Washington state Wednesday, killing one person and injuring at least three others, authorities said.
Brian Schaeffer of the Spokane Fire Department told reporters that one person died at Freeman High School in the tiny town of Rockford, south of Spokane, and three injured victims were taken to a hospital.

Spokane County Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich said at the scene that the shooter was in custody, The Spokesman-Review newspaper reported.

“A 19-year-old Michigan man is accused of fatally shooting his mother while she slept after she told he couldn’t keep a puppy.
Andrew Willson was charged with murder and felony firearm possession on Monday after he allegedly shot his 51-year-old mother, Lisa Marie Willson, while she slept in her bed early Friday morning in Wheatfield Township, the Lansing State Journal reported.

“It was around 5 p.m. on a Monday in late August, and an 8-year-old boy, like so many others that summer evening, was playing in a back yard. The kids he was with had a few years on him — some were as old as 14 — and he had no reason to suspect that the picnic table or tire swing nearby would become tools for what his family alleges was a racially-motivated near-hanging.
That night in Claremont, N.H., took a dark turn, the boy’s family claims, when the teens started taunting the boy with racial epithets and throwing sticks and rocks at his legs. SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — “A registered sex offender has been charged with sexually assaulting an 11-year-old girl in a Springfield hospital while she was visiting a woman who had delivered twins.
Fifty-seven-year-old Dave Saffeels was charged Saturday with nine felonies, including child molestation, stemming from allegations that he assaulted the 11-year-old and a 2-year-old girl. “A McDonald’s employee was arrested last week, after giving birth inside a bathroom and then trying to flush the newborn baby down the toilet.
Sarah Lockner, 25, was working an evening shift at a Redwood City, California McDonald’s on September 4, when she started complaining of stomach pains, according to the Daily Journal.
Her boss told her she could leave early, so she clocked out around 10pm, but didn’t leave.

“A group of protesters in Charlottesville, Virginia on Tuesday covered a statue of former President Thomas Jefferson in black, according to WVIR.
WVIR reported that dozens of people bearing Black Lives Matter slogans appeared at the statue in front of the University of Virginia’s (UVA) Rotunda around 8 p.m. local time that evening.

“An author and journalist came under fire on social media Monday, after she tweeted a reply to an anti-looting warning from Miami police by saying: “The carceral state… is inseparable from white supremacy.”
The Miami Police Department took to Twitter on Sunday, as Hurricane Irma battered the state. “Thinking about looting? Ask these guys how that turned out. #stayindoors,” the post read, sharing a photo of people inside a jail cell.

“As the deadline nears for the Trump administration to set a ceiling for refugee admissions, some close to the president have pushed to lower the number below 50,000, the New York Times reported, citing unnamed sources.
The number would reportedly be the lowest since at least 1980. President Barack Obama said 110,000 refugees should be allowed in the U.S. in 2016, the report said.

The court granted the government’s request to block a federal appeals court ruling that said the administration cannot ban refugees who have formal assurances from resettlement agencies or are in the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program.

“South Korea conducted a live-fire exercise Wednesday, testing an advanced air-launched cruise missile amid rising tensions on the Korean Peninsula.
A South Korean F-15 fired a Taurus missile into a fortified structure, the South Korean military revealed. The German-made Taurus KEPD 350 “bunker buster” cruise missile has a maximum range of roughly 300 miles. Sept. 13 (UPI) — “The most recent satellite images of North Korea’s nuclear site taken Friday show a greater number of surface disturbances following Pyongyang’s sixth nuclear test than previous tests at Punggye-ri, U.S. analysts say.

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — “A suicide bomber struck outside a cricket stadium during a match in Afghanistan’s capital Wednesday, killing at least three people and wounding 12 others, officials said.
Kabul police spokesman Basir Mujahid said hundreds of people were inside watching a match when the bomber struck outside the gates where security guards were searching people.
