“A gunman turned a Las Vegas concert into a killing field Sunday night, murdering at least 50 people and injuring more than 400 others in the deadliest mass shooting in modern United States history.
The suspect, who died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, was identified as 64-year-old Stephen Paddock, a resident of Mesquite, Nevada. “White House press secretary Sarah Sanders praised the heroic acts of attendees of a country music festival in Las Vegas where 58 people were killed and more than 500 injured in a mass shooting Sunday night, including one Tennessee man who was killed protecting his young wife.
Sonny Melton, 29, of Big Sandy, Tenn., was shot and killed at the Route 91 Harvest music festival. He attended the three-day festival with his wife, Heather Melton.
“One man, 29-year-old Sonny Melton, had traveled from Tennessee to Las Vegas for the concert with his wife Heather,” Sanders said at Monday’s White House press briefing. “When the bullets began raining down, Sonny shielded her from danger, selflessly giving up his life to save hers. “The suspect accused of stabbing a police officer before crashing a speeding U-Haul van into a crowd of people in Edmonton, Canada, had come to the country from Somalia trying to claim refugee status, police revealed.
Officers took the 30-year-old suspect into custody and he apparently acted alone, Edmonton Police Chief Rod Knecht said. Officers said pending charges included terrorism and five counts of attempted murder, but they did not reveal his name.
