Unemployment rate matches lowest point in half a century

WASHINGTON DC — How low can we go?

The jobless rate inched down to 3.8% in May, another sign of the strong economy and tight labor market. That tied the lowest unemployment rate since 1969. Since then, the only other time unemployment was this low was in April 2000.

The economy added 223,000 jobs, better than economists expected.

5 dead, nearly 200 sickened in romaine lettuce outbreak

NEW YORK — Four more deaths have been linked to a national food poisoning outbreak blamed on tainted lettuce, bringing the total to five.

Health officials have tied the E. coli outbreak to romaine lettuce grown in Yuma, Arizona. The growing season there ended six weeks ago, and it’s unlikely any tainted lettuce is still in stores or people’s homes, given its short shelf life. But there can be a lag in reporting, and reports of illnesses have continued to come in.

How smart phones are causing kids to experience ‘altered childhoods’

Colleen Hartz’s daughter is 19 years old and is rarely ever seen without her phone in hand. “She uses it for everything,” the mom from Alabama recently told Healthline. “She keeps her calendar on there, she uses the notes part, she loves listening to music on it. She also primarily communicates with friends through text and Snapchat. There are many days she doesn’t have a real conversation with anyone.”

Hartz isn’t alone in what she’s witnessing. A recent report released by Common Sense Media found that 72 percent of teens feel as though they need to immediately respond to notifications from their phone, and 59 percent of parents feel their teens are addicted to their mobile devices.

The Weekly Hack: Cryptocurrency, towns, and big business remain popular targets

If cryptocurrency companies want to replace big banks, they’ll have to get better at stopping hackers from attacking their trading platforms. This time, a hacker made off with nearly $20 million worth of cryptocurrency, affecting people who trade in Bitcoin Gold, Verge, and Monacoin.

The breach, Futurism reports, is classified as a 51 percent attack. This rare, complicated kind of hack allows hackers to take over the computer networks that cryptocurrencies are both traded and mined through. Bitcoin Gold bared the brunt of the attack but says that most traders are not at risk.

#MeToo movement gives pass to Democrats running for California governor

Gavin Newsom had an inappropriate affair with his employee. Antonio Villaraigosa cheated on his wife with a reporter assigned to cover him.

Yet the #MeToo movement, which has urged women to speak up about sexual misconduct allegations, has remained visibly silent about the sexual conduct of two prominent Democrats running for governor in California.

Some are calling it outright hypocrisy. Critics say the two abused their power and took advantage of vulnerable women – not unlike the allegations taking down powerful men all across the country.

News from the Blogoshpere:

BLOWBACK: The Tommy Effect

Last Friday, Tommy Robinson became a political prisoner in “Soviet” England.  He was arrested during his live-stream reporting of the sentencing of rape gang who kept young girls as sex slaves.  Tommy was rushed to jail, and subsequently the UK government issued a media ban on the event. UK soon discovered it could silence the British press, but it couldn’t silence the world. So, they lifted the ban.

The UK censorship represents a heavy handed move by the Establishment to gag Tommy from reporting truth about the politics of Islam in Britain.
