WASHINGTON—U.S. economic growth was a bit stronger than initially thought in the second quarter, notching its best performance in nearly four years and putting the economy on track to hit the Trump administration’s goal of 3 percent annual growth.
Gross domestic product increased at a 4.2 percent annualized rate, the Commerce Department said on Aug. 29 in its second estimate of GDP growth for the April-June quarter. That was slightly up from the 4.1 percent pace of expansion reported in July and was the fastest rate since the third quarter of 2014.
The economy grew at a 2.2 percent pace in the January-March period. The slight upward revision to growth last quarter reflected more business spending on software than previously estimated and less imported petroleum.

An Oklahoma cop who shot dead an unarmed black man is teaching a course that focuses on how to cope with the aftermath of an officer-involved shooting after she was acquitted of first-degree manslaughter.
Rogers County Sheriff Scott Walton said the class focuses on how to cope with the aftermath of an officer-involved shooting. He said such incidents are becoming more frequent and carry with them more mental health and substance abuse issues.
The class has drawn criticism from local activists and Crutcher’s sister, who said it was insulting that the officer who killed her brother is teaching such a class.
Officials in Pasco County, Florida, are searching for a man who they say tried to run over a deputy.
The Pasco Sheriff’s Office on Aug. 29 posted a deputy’s body camera footage, showing the driver leaving Desire Gentleman’s Club in Holiday, Florida, on Aug. 26.
The driver then closes the door of the white Kia Optima sedan and then tries to drive into the deputy in the club parking lot, while the deputy urges him to stop. “Hey, don’t do it,” the deputy says in the video as the driver is moving forward.
“The car he was driving is a 2017 white Kia Optima, which is stolen,” said the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office.
A woman serving time for murdering her husband’s ex-girlfriend was convicted in a separate case last week of tampering with evidence, using acid and alligators in an attempt to get rid of the victim’s body.
Amanda Hayes, 46, was sentenced to 20 years in prison last week for tampering with evidence – or in this case, the corpse of her husband’s ex-girlfriend, 27-year-old Laura Ackerson – the Fort Bend County District Attorney’s Office announced on Tuesday.
In 2011, Hayes and her husband, Grant, killed Ackerson in their home in Raleigh, North Carolina, before dismembering her and transporting her body parts in coolers to Hayes’ sister’s home in Richmond, Texas, according to the district attorney’s office.

News outlets cite a complaint filed in Kanawha County Magistrate Court as saying Charleston police Cpl. Daniel Goffreda is charged with child neglect creating risk of injury.
It says the 32-year-old left his 2-year-old and 5-year-old sons in their car seats while he was in a grocery store Sunday.
A sheriff’s deputy found the boys in the vehicle’s backseat with the doors locked and windows up. The car’s engine was off. First responders had to break a window to remove the children after the older boy said he didn’t know how to open the door.

Michaela Pearson and Candice Little are each charged with felony child abuse and three counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, according to a news release from Winston-Salem police.
The children were 2 and 3-years old and 18-months old, according to arrest warrants.
Officials believe Pearson and Little caused and encouraged the children to smoke marijuana.
An Ohio teen who vanished more than a year ago after witnessing his father’s murder was found alive, police said.
Jacob Caldwell, 15, was found around 11:30 p.m. Monday in the basement of a home 40 miles away in Miami Township, WKEF reported. Authorities located the teen after they received an anonymous tip that led them to Jacob, who was living in the home with four adults who were not related to him.
Jacob was reported missing on Aug. 21, 2017, six days after he and his two siblings watched as his father, Robert Caldwell, was gunned down outside an office building.

That’s the highest number ever reported nationwide, breaking the record set in 2016 by more than 200,000 cases, according to the CDC.
“It is time that President Trump and [Health and Human Services] Secretary [Alex] Azar declare STDs in America a public health crisis,” David Harvey, executive director of the National Coalition of STD Directors, which co-hosted the conference said Tuesday.
It’s official: People really, really hate doing dishes.
Employees at a Memphis Waffle House were filmed fighting behind the counter during Sunday’s breakfast rush after one of the workers reportedly told another to start washing dishes, despite her being off the clock, Fox 13 Memphis reported.
The on-duty employee then pushed the other woman’s head, and the two began trading blows behind the counter, police say.
In footage of the brawl, several of the women’s co-workers can be seen attempting to pull them apart. One can also be seen ripping a chunk of hair from the other’s head before the two are eventually separated.
Brown University retracted research suggesting that young people’s decisions to transition from one sex to another is influenced by their peers and social media after angering the transgender community.
The university published behavioral and social sciences professor Lisa Littman’s research, “Rapid-onset gender dysphoria in adolescents and young adults,” revealing that students and young people considering transitioning might be affected by their peers, The Telegraph reported Tuesday.
Littman conducted her study by posting a 90-question survey on three websites where parents had reported rapid onsets of gender dysphoria in their children. The responses were recorded anonymously and 256 parent-completed surveys met the study’s standards. In nearly 40 percent of the friendship groups described, the majority of the members became “transgender-identified.”
Air Force Gen. Terrence O’Shaughnessy, speaking at the 140th National Guard Association last weekend, said the U.S. “homeland is no longer a sanctuary,” asserting that Russia and China are probing U.S. defenses.
He stated, “We’re in a changing security environment. We used to think about the sanctuary we had with oceans and friendly countries to our north and south, but that’s changing with adversaries that are actually able to reach out and touch us now.”

The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) said that 160 illegal immigrants were detained on Aug. 28 as part of a surprise raid at a Texas manufacturing facility.
The 160 workers were detained at Load Trail, a trailer making firm that had been previously charged with knowingly hiring illegal immigrants, officials said.
ICE said that the raid at Load Trail might be one of the largest in Texas state history, reported The Dallas Morning News.
Berger told the paper that the raid is a message to any companies that knowingly hire illegal immigrants. “We’re watching. And we’re coming,” she said.
Officials with the Wyoming Highway Patrol seized more than $7 million worth — about 1,849 pounds — of marijuana during a traffic stop on Wednesday.
Around 11:30 a.m., a trooper with the state’s highway patrol stopped a Dodge Ram pickup truck that was pulling a flatbed trailer. During the inspection, the trooper’s K-9 officer was “alerted to the odor of narcotics within the load of the trailer,” the Wyoming Highway Patrol said in an online statement.
Further investigation revealed a massive amount of marijuana, which highway patrol officials said had an estimated street value of $7.3 million.

Ten percent disagreed with the majority and one-quarter of respondents were unsure.
When specifically asked about Facebook, 67 percent of self-described conservatives said they trust the company less than one year ago.
Deep State/Politics/ Corruption/Fake News:
A Chinese state-owned company reportedly hacked former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s email server, then inserted code that forwarded them a copy of virtually every email she sent or received after that — a revelation President Trump is demanding be investigated.
The Daily Caller reported that the firm operating in the D.C. area wrote code that was then embedded in the server and generated a “courtesy copy” for almost all her emails — which was then forwarded to the Chinese company.
Report claims China was hacking Hillary Clinton’s private server in real time. Peter Schweizer gives his take on ‘The Ingraham Angle.’
During her entire tenure as Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton dodged Freedom of Information Act requirements by using a private email server to conduct official government business, as well as sent and received classified information that was Top Secret over an unsecured system-an “extremely reckless” (and obviously illegal) act.”
The Intelligence Community Inspector General (ICIG) found that virtually all of Clinton’s emails were sent to a “foreign entity,” Rep. Louie Gohmert, a Texas Republican, said at a July 12 House Committee on the Judiciary hearing. He did not reveal the entity’s identity, but said it was unrelated to Russia.
Two officials with the ICIG, investigator Frank Rucker and attorney Janette McMillan, met repeatedly with FBI officials to warn them of the Chinese intrusion, according to a former intelligence officer with expertise in cybersecurity issues, who was briefed on the matter. He spoke anonymously, as he was not authorized to publicly address the Chinese’s role with Clinton’s server.
Hillary’s carelessness and criminal actions may have led to the deaths of 20 CIA operatives in China.
The Chinese government killed or imprisoned 18 to 20 CIA operatives in China from 2010 to 2012.
At the same time a Chinese-owned company operating in the Washington, D.C., area hacked Hillary Clinton’s private server throughout her term as secretary of state.
China killed or imprisoned 18 to 20 CIA sources from 2010 to 2012, hobbling U.S. spying operations in a massive intelligence breach whose origin has not been identified, the New York Times reported on Saturday.
Investigators remain divided over whether there was a spy within the Central Intelligence Agency who betrayed the sources or whether the Chinese hacked the CIA’s covert communications system, the newspaper reported, citing current and former U.S. officials.
Ingraham: America needs journalists we can trust. As it stands now we not only have to worry about the objectivity of our news sources, we have to worry about their sources as well.
On July 27, CNN reported that Donald Trump’s personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, would be willing to tell Special Counsel Robert Mueller that the president knew in advance of the June 2016 Trump Tower meeting between his campaign and a Kremlin-linked lawyer who was allegedly selling dirt on Hillary Clinton.
This revelation not only contradicted Trump’s denials, but also Cohen’s testimony to Congress. It was quite the exclusive—the closest we’ve come to ferreting out “collusion” since the last time CNN botched a big scoop.
The story, bylined by Carl Bernstein, Marshall Cohen, and former Obama administration political appointee Jim Sciutto, cited numerous “sources” with knowledge of the supposed bombshell. The Washington Post, chasing the same story, soon outed Cohen’s lawyer, the preternaturally mendacious Lanny Davis, as the source of the contention.
Well, on Monday BuzzFeed ran another article in which Davis admitted to being CNN’s source as well, even though the network had initially claimed that Davis had declined to comment for the article—which turns out not only to be untrue but a ham-fisted way to hide the story’s origin.
SAN FRANCISCO — The post went up quietly on Facebook’s internal message board last week. Titled “We Have a Problem With Political Diversity,” it quickly took off inside the social network.
“We are a political monoculture that’s intolerant of different views,” Brian Amerige, a senior Facebook engineer, wrote in the post, which was obtained by The New York Times. “We claim to welcome all perspectives, but are quick to attack — often in mobs — anyone who presents a view that appears to be in opposition to left-leaning ideology.”
Since the post went up, more than 100 Facebook employees have joined Mr. Amerige to form an online group called FB’ers for Political Diversity, according to two people who viewed the group’s page and who were not authorized to speak publicly. The aim of the initiative, according to Mr. Amerige’s memo, is to create a space for ideological diversity within the company.
Some donors to a “truth fund” promoted by attorney Lanny Davis believe he should issue refunds after he admitted lying about what his client Michael Cohen knows about President Trump.
Davis unveiled the “Michael Cohen Truth Fund” last week, and netted about $165,000 since the former Trump “fixer” pleaded guilty to tax and bank fraud, and to campaign finance crimes he said were at Trump’s direction.
Davis promoted the fundraiser with interviews saying Cohen would be an open book for special counsel Robert Mueller, before saying he gave false information to news outlets about what Cohen knows.
Davis now says he doesn’t know if that’s true, despite anonymously providing the information to CNN and then confirming the CNN report anonymously for the New York Post and the Washington Post. “I made a mistake,” the former Bill Clinton aide told BuzzFeed on Monday.
Another very fake news scandal has engulfed CNN as the network’s credibility crisis reaches another fever pitch just over a year after three senior network staffers were forced to resign in disgrace over a similar scandal.
This time, though, famed Watergate reporter Carl Bernstein is at the center of the scandal, and the network for now is dug in despite deep criticism from across the political and ideological spectrum as far-ranging as Breitbart News and Daily Caller among others on one side, and the Associated Press, Washington Post, BuzzFeed, and more on the other.
House Freedom Caucus Chairman Mark Meadows suggests FBI leaked information to the press and used the resulting articles to help obtain surveillance warrants. Plus, what did Bruce Ohr know about the Steele dossier?
Brian Fallon, a former spokesman for Senate Minority Leader Sen. Chuck Schumer (D., N.Y.) and Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign, blasted Senate Democrats for letting Republicans easily confirm several judicial nominees.
The nominees for district court judgeship, who were put forward by President Donald Trump, will be able to serve on the bench for the rest of their lives.
Schumer made a deal with Senate Majority Leader Sen. Mitch McConnell (R., Ky.) to bypass the normal 30 hour waiting period for each nominee and allow for confirmation so senators could go home earlier than scheduled,
Former San Francisco mayor Gavin Newsom is likely to be California’s next governor. He has a considerable lead in the polls and he has the “right” position on all the issues for progressives in the state. When it comes to healthcare, he wants to cover everyone regardless of immigration status.
Megan Keller reports at The Hill:
California gov candidate backs universal healthcare for undocumented immigrants
California Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom (D), who is running for governor, said in an interview released Tuesday that he would like to see the state pay for universal healthcare for all illegal immigrants.
One year after Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. was embroiled in a scandal for accepting $10,000 from Harvey Weinstein’s lawyer after he declined to prosecute sexual assault charges, the same lawyer, David Boies, gave $25,000 to the campaign of New York Governor Andrew “America was never that great” Cuomo, according to state records reviewed by Capital & Main and Sludge.
Cuomo’s June order came within weeks of the $25,000 donation to his reelection campaign, according to New York campaign finance records – approximately 10% of the $245,000 Boies and his firm have donated to Cuomo’s campaigns since 2009.
Tucker, However, politicians in South Africa are still planning to seize land without compensation on racial grounds. Western liberals support this. Barack Obama supports it.
So does British Prime Minister Theresa May. So does pretty much our entire ruling class and news media.
They’re all in favor of collective punishment based on race. That’s the real story here.
