Job Openings Hit New Record High of 7.1 Million

The monthly Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey, or JOLTS, released by the Labor Department on Tuesday showed job openings rose to 7.136 million. Economists had forecast 6.9 million.

The prior month was revised up to 7.077 million, the first time this number has ever exceeded 7 million. Until April of 2017, there had never been more than 6 million job openings.

A Maryland police officer has been suspended without pay after allegedly raping a woman during a traffic stop.

Six-year veteran officer Ryan Macklin was taken into custody Monday following the alleged Thursday morning incident, according to the Prince George’s County Police Department.

Police say a preliminary investigation revealed Macklin pulled over a driver and then forced her “to perform a sexual act while they were both seated in her car in a nearby parking lot.

A former Atlanta fire chief who wrote a Christian book for a men’s Bible study and then got fired for it has won a $1.2 million settlement with the city, WAGA-TV reported.

Kelvin Cochran was dismissed from his post in January 2015 after controversy over “Who Told You That You Are Naked?” a book he self-published that contains passages some viewed as anti-gay.

An investigation was launched March 2 when Nappanee police responded to a report of a child who needed help. Responding officers discovered a malnourished and underweight boy with signs of abuse on his body, according to the station. It wasn’t immediately clear how old the child was.

A fifth person was arrested Sunday in a chilling child abuse case in Indiana involving a boy who was found severely injured and malnourished earlier this year.

The boy was missing 1- to 2-inch pieces of his scalp, had a cut septum, his fingernails appeared to have been dug into, his cheek and nose were scabbed, he had broken arms and broken teeth and a severe weight issue, the Times Union reported in May, citing court documents.

Of the clergy members named, none are still active in ministry, 28 were archdiocesan priests, three were priests of independent religious orders, 13 were never arrested and 14 are still alive, according to The Washington Post.

New images were released Tuesday in the search for a missing teenager considered to be “in danger” after her parents were found dead inside their Wisconsin home Monday following a suspicious 911 call.

The pictures’ release comes as authorities ramp up their efforts following an outpouring of tips — including one from Florida. Miami police said a girl matching Jayme Closs’ description was seen near Northwest 27th Avenue and 11th Street on Monday afternoon.

The 13-year-old vanished early Monday from her home near Barron, about 80 miles northeast of Minneapolis.

A teenager was arrested Monday in connection with the vicious beating of a Jewish man — an assault that reportedly occurred fewer than 30 minutes after the suspect was released from New York City police custody for an unrelated shoplifting incident.

Surveillance video shows the unidentified teenager accosting the victim while crossing the street with a large stick. The victim attempts to flee and is seen running to a nearby laundromat, CrownHeights.info reported.

Undercover NY cops and Pagan bikers get into wild bar brawl

A wild bar brawl in Pittsburgh between undercover cops and reputed members of the Pagans motorcycle club ended in the arrests of four bikers, according to police.

The fight at Kopy’s Bar on South 12th Street broke out early Friday after a customer outed four narcotics detectives working undercover to investigate complaints of drug dealing, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported.

WACO, TX (CBS News) – A Texas man was sentenced to 244 years of prison time for the rape of his then 38-day-old daughter while in a meth-induced haze, CBS affiliate KWTX-TV reports. Jurors convicted Patricio Medina, 27, on multiple counts for sexually assaulting his newborn in March 2014.

The child suffered 45 broken bones and other injuries.

SPRINGFIELD, MO (The Springfield News-Leader) – A 72-year-old man raped a woman who had the mental capacity of an 8-year-old at a Springfield bus stop, police say.

Patricio Romero-Enriquez allegedly admitted to police that he had sex with the woman on a bus stop bench, but said it was consensual.

According to police, Romero-Enriquez said the woman was his neighbor, they had known each other for about three years and they mostly communicated using hand signs and gestures.

HEITKAMP APOLOGIZES FOR RUNNING AD NAMING ALLEGED SEXUAL ASSAULT SURVIVORS WITHOUT THEIR PERMISSION

North Dakota Democratic Sen. Heidi Heitkamp apologized Tuesday for publishing a Sunday ad listing alleged sexual assault survivors, a number of whom said they had not given their permission to be in the ad or were not survivors of sexual assault.

“I deeply regret this mistake and we are in the process of issuing a retraction, personally apologizing to each of the people impacted by this and taking the necessary steps to ensure this never happens again,” Heitkamp said in a statement, according to The Associated Press.

The painting by Andy Thomas was spotted by many social media users on Sunday after it was seen during Trump’s “60 Minutes” interview.

Trump sanctions Iran over alleged child soldier recruitment

The Trump administration on Tuesday hit Iran with another round of sanctions, accusing the country of recruiting child soldiers as young as 12 to fight for the regime of Bashar Al-Assad in Syria.

The sanctions primarily target the Basij Resistance Force, a domestic arm of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps focused on recruiting young Iranians to advance the country’s aims.

The administration’s Tuesday action specifically names a litany of Iranian banking and industrial institutions with ties to Basij, blocking their U.S. property and barring U.S. persons from engaging with them.

HAVANA – A Cuban dissident group said Tuesday the island’s government has released Tomas Nunez Magdariaga, who had carried out a lengthy hunger strike to protest his imprisonment.

The U.S. government had publicly called for his release on Oct. 4, citing “grave concerns” over his health.

A leader of the Patriotic Union of Cuba, Ovidio Martin Castellanos, told The Associated Press that Nunez Magdariaga was driven to his home in eastern Cuba on Monday night.
